Coffee
Coffee. What is coffee? It is a bean. It is a drink. It is a culture. Coffee starts out a a little berry on a tree, then ends up facilitating important decisions everywhere. Here is some information I picked up along the way. Coffee is generally grown in Central and South America, and in Africa. Yes, it is grown other places, but these are the main ones. Coffee tastes different according to where it was grown. It starts as a berry on a tree. Beginning green and ending up red. The berries are harvested by hand. There are various ways of processing these berries, but essentially, they are dried and the seed is then shipped to a roaster. Roasting coffee. You can do it your self with an iron skillet. You can get it pre-roasted from a supermarket, where they roasted it big quanities a long time before you bought it. You can get it pre-roasted from a specialty retailer. ie: Starbucks, Seattle's Best, Barnies, etc. Generally, the specialty retailers get it to the consumer sooner after roasting, but not soon enough. The best way to purchase pre-roasted coffee, is to go through a small batch roaster (roasters who roasted when it is needed). Coffee, whole bean, will stay fresh, stored properly, about 4-6 weeks. Ground coffee will last 1-2 weeks. If you love your coffee, the this writer recommends using a small batch roaster to purchase whole beans and grinding your coffee just before brewing. I could go on and on. But stay tooned.... more coffee stuff to come.
